General-purpose AI model

Under the AI Act, a model with significant generality that can perform a wide range of distinct tasks.

Under the EU AI Act, a general-purpose AI model is an AI model, often trained with a large amount of data using self-supervision at scale, that displays significant generality, can competently perform a wide range of distinct tasks and can be integrated into a variety of downstream systems. Its providers must keep technical documentation, give information to downstream providers, adopt a copyright policy and publish a summary of training content, with lighter duties for some open-source models and extra duties for models with systemic risk. Most AI agents are downstream systems built on such models.
