Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)
A unique twenty-character code that identifies a legal entity and links to verified reference data about it.
The Legal Entity Identifier is a unique twenty-character alphanumeric code that identifies a legal entity, such as a company, and gives access to clear identification data about it. GLEIF explains that every LEI represents only one entity and connects to verified reference information from authoritative local sources. In business onboarding, an agent can look up an LEI and compare its reference data with what the customer submitted, flagging differences for a person.
