Hi! Agent Minute, episode 1. Today's term: AI system. Theo, the phrase AI system appears in almost every new regulation. Does it have a precise meaning, or is it just a label?

  2. Theo

It has a precise one. The EU AI Act defines it as a machine-based system that infers from its inputs how to produce outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations or decisions.

  3. Nora

So a spreadsheet rule that flags late invoices is not an AI system?

  4. Theo

Usually not. Fixed rules written by a person do not infer anything. The definition also mentions varying levels of autonomy and the possibility of adapting after deployment.

  5. Nora

Why should a payments or product team care about the label?

  6. Theo

Because it decides which rules apply. If an agent is built on an AI system and used in a listed area, such as assessing creditworthiness, a specific set of obligations follows.
