# What a licence is: copyright by default, permission by licence

> Code, text and data have an owner the moment they are created. A licence is the owner's written permission, with conditions. This episode is the base for the whole season.

## Transcript

**Nora:** Hi! This is Licences, Plainly, from AgenticOpenFinance™. I'm Nora, here with Theo.

**Theo:** Hello everyone!

**Nora:** Theo, this season is about licences. Start at the beginning: why does code need a licence at all? I wrote it, I published it, done.

**Theo:** Not quite. In most countries, the moment you write code you hold the copyright. Nobody else may copy, change or share it without your permission.

**Nora:** So a licence is that permission?

**Theo:** Yes. A written statement from the rights holder: you may do these things, on these conditions. Ownership does not move. Only some rights are granted.

**Nora:** When I open a licence, what should I look for? They tend to be long.

**Theo:** Three questions. What does it permit, such as commercial use. What conditions does it set, such as keeping the author's notice. And what does it disclaim, such as warranty and liability.

**Nora:** Why does this matter for a team building agents?

**Theo:** Every package, model and dataset in an agent stack arrives with a licence. Those licences decide whether you can sell the product, run it as a service, or deliver it to a bank.

**Nora:** The written version and the details are on the AgenticOpenFinance™ blog.

**Theo:** Our voices were made with AI. See you next week, bye!
