# Screen scraping

> A third party logging in with a customer's credentials to read data from the bank's customer interface.

Screen scraping is the practice of a third party using a customer's online banking credentials to log in as the customer and read data from the bank's customer-facing interface. It gives the third party the same power as the customer, makes access hard to limit or revoke, and can expose the customer to liability for sharing credentials. Open banking rules in the European Union and the UK moved third-party access to dedicated interfaces, and agents that drive a customer's banking session directly reproduce the same risks.
