# Automated individual decision-making

> A decision about a person made solely by automated means that has legal or similarly significant effects.

The GDPR gives people the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling, that produces legal effects or similarly significant effects on them, unless an exception applies such as contract, law or explicit consent. Where an exception is used, safeguards include the right to obtain human intervention, to express a view and to contest the decision. The UK has revised its version of this rule through the Data (Use and Access) Act, so firms should check which regime applies.
